Shine was established to help meet the educational needs of orphans and vulnerable children in deprived, poverty-stricken communities in Africa by setting up free literacy and numeracy schools. Our mission is to help alleviate poverty by tackling one of its root causes – illiteracy – among children in some of the poorest parts of Africa.

A child living in a shanty town who cannot read has little hope for the future. They lack personal empowerment and will not go on to become educated. In turn, they are unlikely to break the cycle of poverty in which they are currently living. Being uneducated, they may not be able to avoid diseases like HIV/AIDS or malaria, which are rife in Africa. Their children are also likely to be illiterate and so the cycle will continue.

Equipping a child with basic literacy skills gives them more than just the ability to read. It gives them hope, regardless of their current circumstances and hardships. To fight illiteracy is to fight one of the underlying causes of poverty and hopelessness.
