In 2010 Sian’s third trip to Zambia brought her to Shine Zambia Reading Academy where she spent three and a half months volunteering at the school. The skills she brought as a trained and experienced Mathematics teacher were used to train Shine teachers and work with them to develop the school programme. On her return she became a trustee and took on many responsibilities within the charity, particularly with regards to running the school. She plans to make more trips to Zambia to continue working with the school!
Mal, the founder of A to Z Literacy Movement (an American charity bringing books from America to Zambia) first visited Shine Zambia Reading Academy in 2009, while they were still in rented rooms, during a trip to Zambia. In August 2010 she returned to Shine Zambia Reading Academy, bringing a fellow teacher with her, to work with our children and teachers for a week, sharing their experience in literacy education.
Betty joined Mal on her 2010 trip to Zambia in August and spent a week work teaching our children and teachers and sharing her skills as a teacher.
