Shine offers completely free education to the orphans and vulnerable children of Kalikiliki who have limited or no access to basic education. At the start of 2011 we had 105 children, aged 8 to 16, enrolled in our Reading Academy and we are aiming to expand this to 240 children in the coming years.
We believe we are giving Shine children the best possible chance to reach their potential by having only 15 pupils in a class so that our teachers have the opportunity to give each child the attention they deserve.
We understand that children do not learn effectively on an empty stomach. We provide all Shine children a daily meal of nutritious porridge donated by the World Food Programme and cooked by local women employed by Shine. Without the meal they receive at Shine, many of the children would not eat at all that day.
Shine believes that every child is precious, lovable and sacred. Every child has talents within them. Every child has the ability to learn, develop and eventually make a positive contribution to their community and the world at large. It is Shine’s mission to lovingly nurture these children so that they may achieve their potential and truly shine. Learning at Shine is fun for the children. We want the children to enjoy attending our literacy programme.
